Lebanese Premier Rashid Karami said that Syria fully supports new Lebanese peace talks due to begin on Tuesday. Karami, speaking to reporters in the northern port of Tripoli after returning from talks with President Hafez Assad in Damascus, said he had outlined to Syrian officials the principles on which the peace talks between Christians and Muslims would be held. These included the spirit of a Syrian-mediated peace agreement concluded in Damascus last year, he said. That agreement broke down when Lebanese Christian leaders failed to back the endorsement of Elie Hobeika, the Christian militia leader who signed it.
