A Welsh rugby player was jailed for a month after pleading guilty to punching an opponent unconscious while he lay helpless under another player during a match.

The sentence was considered a tough warning to violent sports stars, and British Sports Minister Dick Tracey said, “Players have got to set an example to their fans.”

David Bishop, 25, who plays for Pontypool, knocked Newbridge player Chris Jarman unconscious with a hard blow to the face during a match last year.
