Guard Charged With Planting Fake Bombs

A security guard was charged Thursday with planting two fake bombs at the K-mart department store in Rosemead where he worked.

Deputy Dist. Atty. William Holliman said Gary Ayala on Aug. 23 and Aug. 25 made telephone calls from inside the store warning that bombs had been planted. In both cases, he then located the devices, Holliman added. Ayala is free on $5,000 bail.

K-mart officials estimated that they lost $35,000 in revenues from having to evacuate the store on the two occasions. The devices contained explosive powder but were incapable of being detonated, authorities said.
