Q: I suspect my dog has cataracts. How successful is cataract surgery? Is a lens always placed in the dog’s eye?--M.M.
A: Currently 75% to 85% of cataract surgeries are considered successful. However, some dogs may also have a degeneration of the retina; in such cases, surgery will not restore vision. Since mature cataracts make it impossible to examine the retina, have your pet’s eyes examined immediately if you suspect cataracts. Lens replacement following cataract surgery isn’t necessary.
