Shoemaker Guides Evil Elaine to Victory in Coronado Stakes at Del Mar
DEL MAR — Heavily favored Evil Elaine, ridden by Bill Shoemaker, led from the start Monday en route to a 2 3/4-length victory in the $55,200 Coronado Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.
Perchance To Dream, ridden by Luis Ortega, finished second, three lengths in front of Key Bid, ridden by Alex Solis, in a field of nine juvenile fillies.
Evil Elaine, who earned her owners $32,700 for the victory, was clocked in a swift 1.09 3/5 for six furlongs over a fast track. Sent off as the 1-2 favorite, she paid $3, $2.80 and $2.40. Perchance To Dream returned $6.60 and $4.20, and Key Bid paid $3.80 to show.
