Hawthorne : Parking Space Ordinance
The City Council voted 3 to 1 Monday to draft an ordinance that would reduce the maximum number of compact-car parking spaces allowed for businesses from 50% to 30% of the spaces provided.
The ordinance, which would affect only new construction, would include an exemption for employers with more than 100 parking spaces, such as Northrop Corp. and Mattel.
City Manager R. Kenneth Jue said Northrop officials persuaded the city that large companies should be excluded from the change.
“When the revisions were first proposed (two months ago) Northrup proved to us that virtually half of their employees drive compact cars,” Jue said.
Councilwoman Ginny McGinnis Lambert, the only dissenter, said the ordinance would force cars back onto the streets and that new small businesses might be discouraged from locating in Hawthorne.
The proposed ordinance will be introduced at the Sept. 22 council meeting and will require a second reading. It would take affect 30 days after the second reading.
