Dog Has the Time for Music but Can’t Get in the Mood

--Fudge, a 15-month-old boxer pooch in Shrewsbury, England, has been a watchdog in more ways than one lately. In an alarming mishap, the dog swallowed a musical watch belonging to his 13-year-old master, Marcus Waters, and for the next couple of days his stomach played Glenn Miller’s arrangement of “American Patrol” every 12 hours. Marcus was given the watch to wake him for his daily rounds as a newspaper delivery boy in the western England city. “My watch went missing on Sunday,” the boy said. “At 6:45 Monday morning, Mom said she heard the watch go off in the kitchen, and we looked all over but couldn’t find it. She heard it again the next morning and we began to think the dog had eaten it.” An X-ray at the veterinarian’s office confirmed the diagnosis. The watch was removed Wednesday and the dog was reported to be doing well.

--The uniforms are different, but Chicago Bears wide receiver Willie Gault believes that football and ballet are both good activities for men. So he will shed his jersey, shoulder pads and other football gear and don tights and slippers this month for his ballet debut at a North Side Chicago high school. “I wanted to show them that ballet is not a sissy sport, that a masculine guy like myself can come in and do it,” Gault said at a rehearsal for “Dreamer’s Journey,” a show that mixes classical ballet with popular rap poetry written and performed by a cast of youngsters from Lawndale, one of Chicago’s roughest neighborhoods. The program is a collaboration between the Chicago City Ballet and the Better Boys Foundation, of which Gault is a board member, to raise money for both organizations.

--Drugs tests have shown that San Antonio, Tex., City Councilman Ed Harrington is a heavy user--of coffee. “The doctor said I flunked the caffeine part,” Harrington said. “Then he asked how much coffee I drank. I said eight to 10 cups and he almost went through the roof. They told me to cut down.” Harrington and Mayor Henry Cisneros took the test together as a way of showing support for drug screening.

--Princess Diana is Britain’s most stylish person, according to a Gallup Poll that ranked her husband, Prince Charles, a distant second. Charles’ brother, Prince Andrew, tied for third place with TV talk show host Terry Wogan. Andrew’s wife, the former Sarah Ferguson, ranked fifth, according to the poll. Queen Elizabeth II came in sixth, actress Joan Collins seventh, Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher eighth, Queen Mother Elizabeth ninth and Princess Michael of Kent 10th. The poll of more than 1,000 people was commissioned by Polaroid U.K. Ltd.
