CANBY’S VERDICT
Reports of Vincent Canby’s soon-to-be retirement as New York Times movie critic are greatly exaggerated.
Said Canby, 62, the paper’s critic for 16 years, “It’s very difficult to respond to rumors when they are entirely wrong.” He’s aware of the persistent gossip, attributing it to his six-week disappearance for jury duty and a five-week vacation.
Rumors running through the movie community had Times theater critic Frank Rich, a former film reviewer, taking Canby’s place.
