Rehnquist Given Speeding Citation
WASHINGTON — Supreme Court Justice William H. Rehnquist, nominated by President Reagan to be chief justice of the United States, was given a ticket for speeding and two other traffic violations last week, police said Friday.
Police spokesman Tom Bell said Rehnquist was pulled over while traveling 41 m.p.h. in a 30-m.p.h. zone on Lorcom Lane, a well-traveled side street, in the northern Virginia suburb of Arlington at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 4.
Rehnquist, 62, whose nomination is being debated by the Senate, where it is opposed by liberals, was ticketed for speeding, for failing to have his car registration papers with him and for not updating his driver’s license to include his current address, police said.
Rehnquist faces fines of about $80 unless he decides to contest the ticket.
