Soccer : Thibodeau’s Late Goal Gives Titans a 1-0 Victory Over BYU

On a deflected corner kick in the final minutes of play, Cal State Fullerton defeated Brigham Young University, 1-0, in soccer Saturday at Provo, Utah.

In the 83rd minute, senior Reid Thibodeau angled a kick that glanced off the head of a BYU defender and into the net.

The Titans are 1-1-1. BYU is 1-6.

In women’s soccer action:

UC Irvine 8, Occidental 0--The Anteaters’ team, established last season, scored a school record for goals in its nonconference season opener at Irvine.

Kim Cusimano had three goals and Karin Grelsson added two. Goalkeeper Valerie Dehn, who played guard on the Anteater basketball team for four years, recorded her first shutout. UCI plays at Claremont-Mudd Saturday at 2 p.m.

Chapman 1, Cal Poly Pomona 1--Goalie Teri Schaub made nine saves to lead the Panthers to an overtime tie in Orange. Pomona took a 1-0 lead 36 minutes into the first half on Melissa Rogers’ goal. The Panthers tied the score with 37:14 left in regulation when Maggie Reardon put in the rebound of a Susie Brown indirect free kick that hit the top of the goal. Chapman’s record is 0-1-1.

In community college action:

UC Riverside Club 2, Cypress 1--The Chargers, playing their first match since dropping soccer in 1975, lost the nonleague game at Cypress.

The Chargers took a 1-0 lead at the 16-minute mark of the second half on a goal by Joe Baretta, the freshman right wing from Cypress High School. After falling behind, 2-1, the Chargers had a chance to tie with 30 seconds left, but a header by Tarek Hilal hit the left goal post and bounced away.

Cypress will travel to Mt. San Antonio College for a 3 p.m. match Monday.
