Waite Wins Ballard Classic at Velodrome
John Waite of Huntington Beach, a former national sprint champion, won the Rod Ballard Sprint Classic on Saturday night at the Encino Velodrome.
The race was named for the cyclist who died a year ago after suffering a spill at the Velodrome.
Ballard fell after coming into contact with a bike ridden by Mark Garrett. On Saturday, Garrett finished second to Waite in the 750-meter race.
Waite clocked a time of 12.18 seconds. Finishing behind Garrett was Marcello Arrue of Altadena. Bobby Livingston of Atlanta was fourth.
In the women’s division, Pam Deem of Colorado Springs beat Robin Coon of San Diego.
