The New York Yankees beat the Boston Red Sox, 11-6, at Yankee Stadium Saturday, but the story once again was not the game but the behavior of the New York fans.

All the scoring already had occured when an incident took place in the eighth inning that prompted a Red Sox invasion of the stands and resulted in the arrest of three fans.

Dan Pasqua had popped out to Boston’s Jim Rice near the seats on the left-field line. Rice made the catch but lost his cap in a collision with shortstop Spike Owen.

Owen bruised his ribs in the collision and had to leave the field. As he did so, Rice’s cap disappeared, grabbed by a fan. Rice quickly followed his cap into the stands, as did nearly all his teammates, the coaches and Manager John McNamara.

“I’m not going to have my players going over the railing without me going after them,” McNamara said. “Somebody grabbed Oil Can’s (Dennis Boyd’s) hat too, and I grabbed it back.”

McNamara said Rice charged into the stands after the spectator had said something to him. “Jimmy asked the guy for his hat back,” McNamara said. “He (the fan) gave him some obscenities, about himself and the team. That’s when Jimmy took off.”

Some of Rice’s teammates were exasperated by the incident, but club General Manager Lou Gorman said he didn’t believe there would be repercussions from the league.

“There were a lot of obscenities, a lot of shoving,” pitcher Al Nipper said. “People shoved us. I know I got shoved.”

It was the second incident in recent weeks involving fans at the stadium. On Aug. 28, the Angels’ Wally Joyner escaped injury when he was grazed on the arm by a knife thrown from the upper deck at Yankee Stadium.

Pitcher Roger Clemens said: “Some of these people had too much beer in them. Then it’s not a ballgame. It becomes whatever they want it to be.”

Cleveland 8, Oakland 6--Joe Carter and Cory Snyder scored on consecutive wild pitches by A’s reliever Jay Howell in the eighth inning at Cleveland as the Indians extended their winning streak over Oakland to nine games.

Bryan Oelkers (3-3) pitched one-third of an inning in relief of Ernie Camacho to gain the win, while Bill Mooneyham (4-5), who walked Carter and Snyder to open the Cleveland eighth, took the loss.

Detroit 7, Baltimore 2--A bases-loaded single by Darrell Evans and a bases-loaded triple by Chet Lemon keyed a five-run seventh inning as the Tigers won at Detroit.

Toronto 7, Milwaukee 1--Willie Upshaw hit a two-run home run, and Tony Fernandez had four hits in support of four-hit pitching by Joe Johnson and Mark Eichhorn at Milwaukee as the Blue Jays snapped a five-game losing streak.

Kansas City 5, Seattle 4--Dennis Leonard and Bud Black combined on a six-hitter at Kansas City, and the Royals capitalized on two errors by Mariner right fielder Danny Tartabull to score three runs.
