A 20-year-old Marine stationed at the U.S. Marine Corps Air Station died Sunday of injuries suffered in a two-car collision at Jeffrey and Trabuco Canyon roads in El Toro, authorities said.

The victim was identified by the Orange County coroner’s office as Martin B. Spriet of Chicago. He suffered massive head injuries when he was ejected from the passenger side of a 1979 Toyota Celica in the crash at 11:55 p.m. Saturday, a spokesman for the California Highway Patrol said Sunday. He died about 6 a.m. Sunday.

The driver of the Toyota, a Marine identified as John McAllister, was arrested on suspicion of felony drunk driving, a CHP spokesman said. The 20-year-old Santa Ana resident was treated for cuts and abrasions at Saddleback Community Hospital.

A CHP investigator said McAllister ran a red light while traveling west on Trabuco Canyon Road at about 50 to 55 m.p.h. McAllister’s Toyota struck a 1986 Volkswagen in the intersection at Jeffrey Road. The driver of the Volkswagen, identified as Bryan Kubiak, 19, of Irvine, was not injured.
