Solidarity founder Lech Walesa said the release of 225 political prisoners under an amnesty program has created a “new situation” in Poland. After a Mass in his hometown of Gdansk, the Nobel Peace laureate was joined by Father Henryk Jankowski, who said the amnesty was not a favor but “an act of justice” and added, “Amnesty was the first step toward reconciliation with the nation.” Dissident sources said that all imprisoned leaders of the outlawed Solidarity union have been freed under the amnesty. However, other Solidarity activists who have refused to surrender are still in hiding.
