Pat Phoenix, British Soap Opera Queen, Dies at 62
MANCHESTER, England — The unchallenged queen of British soap opera, 62-year-old Pat Phoenix, died of lung cancer today.
Her husband of seven days, actor Tony Booth, was at her bedside when she died at Alexandra Hospital near Manchester, a hospital spokesman said. She was hospitalized three weeks ago.
Phoenix was one of the best known faces in Britain after starring for 24 years in the country’s longest-running soap, “Coronation Street.” She left the show in 1984 and began a new stage career.
The Irish-born actress married Booth, her third husband, in the hospital on Sept. 10.
Phoenix will be seen on British television shortly in her last role, playing the part of a dying woman.
