Duarte : Trash Collection Fee Hiked

Share

Starting in October, residents will pay $7.14 for monthly curbside rubbish disposal, a 30% hike from the current $5.50 rate.

The City Council approved the increase at its Sept. 9 meeting. The new rate reflects a 14.9% annual rate hike plus an 82-cent surcharge, according to Deputy City Manager Jesse Duff.

Duff said that Best Disposal Company was due an increase on April 1, 1985, under their agreement with the city, but because of “personnel turnovers at Best, the audit to determine the increase amount was not done at the time.”

The 82 cents, Duff explained, is a “catch-up” charge to compensate the company for the delay in raising rates. Duff added that the higher disposal rate is still lower than the recent increases paid to Best by two other cities. Monrovia’s rate is now $7.33 and Arcadia’s is $7.15.

The new rates reflect an increase in dumping fees, which have gone up 46%, Duff said.

“It appears landfill capacity is filling up and disposal rates are being adjusted accordingly,” he said.
