A tear-gas canister was hurled into the grandstand of a high school football game in Gaffney, S.C., spewing fumes that injured about 250 fans and players, officials said. Five people were hospitalized.
The Gaffney High School Indians were trailing the visiting Greenwood Eagles, 9-7, with 57 seconds on the clock Friday night when the five-inch-long canister was tossed into the home stands.
“People didn’t know what they were breathing. There was hysteria involved,” a hospital spokesman said.
Police said there were no suspects in the case.
