A union decision to allow striking members to vote on a Sept. 3 contract proposal averts, at least temporarily, a proposed nationwide boycott of the wine produced by 11 California vintners, including the E. and J. Gallo Co. of Modesto. The wineries were struck during the harvest and crushing season in a dispute involving wages, work rules, fringe benefits and pensions. Union officials agreed to put off the threatened boycott, scheduled to begin today after agreeing to present to 2,200 union members a new three-year contract offer--the terms of which were not disclosed--from the wineries.
