Pablo Antonio Vega, a Roman Catholic bishop expelled from Nicaragua last July by the Sandinista government, said that Nicaraguan bishops will try to negotiate his return in talks with Sandinista officials. Speaking at a U.S. Catholic Conference press conference in Washington, Vega said he believes that Nicaraguan Cardinal Miguel Obando y Bravo will participate in the talks, due to begin Saturday. Vega was expelled from Nicaragua after the government accused him of supporting U.S. policy against the Managua government. Vega is vice president of the Nicaraguan Bishops Conference and has been one of the Sandinista government’s harshest critics.
