College Roundup : UC Irvine Loses to USD in Soccer, 2-0

Mike Brille and Eric Deutsch scored goals Wednesday to lead the University of San Diego soccer team to a 2-0 victory over UC Irvine in a nonconference match at Irvine.

The Toreros improved to 7-1. The Anteaters dropped to 2-5.

UCI travels to Cal State San Bernardino Friday for a nonconference game.

In other soccer action:

Temple 2, Chapman 0--Matt Mannino and Tom Crongardi each scored to help the Owls at Philadelphia. Mannino scored the game’s first goal 17 minutes into the first half, and Crongardi scored with four minutes left in the second.

Temple, ranked 12th in the nation in Division I, improves to 5-0; Chapman is 4-3-1. The Panthers play at East Stroudsburg (Penn.) State on Friday.

Cal Baptist 3, Christ College of Irvine 1--The Eagles couldn’t overcome a 2-0 halftime deficit and dropped the Golden State Athletic Conference match to the Lancers at Cal Baptist. Bob Stevens scored the only goal for CCI (0-1).

In water polo action:

Cal State Long Beach 13, Cal State Fullerton 6--Lenny Canchola and Mark Monroe each scored two goals for the Titans, but it wasn’t enough as the 49ers recorded the Pacific Coast Athletic Assn. victory at Long Beach.

Whittier 17, Chapman 2--Keith Black and Keith Heminger each scored four goals to lead the Poets at Whittier. John Bristol scored both goals for Chapman (1-4).

In women’s volleyball action:

UC Irvine 3, Cal State Fullerton 1--Kris Roberts had 10 kills to help the Anteaters defeat the Titans, 4-15, 15-9, 15-4, 15-4, in a PCAA match in Irvine’s Crawford Hall. The Anteaters improve to 1-2 in conference, 7-11 overall. The Titans are 0-1, 6-9.

Chapman 3, La Verne 2--Tammy Light had 23 kills and Christy Anderson added 13 to lead he Panthers to a 15-12, 17-19, 15-8, 7-15, 15-8, win over La Verne in a nonconference match played in the Hutton Sports Center. Chapman improves to 4-5. La Verne is 3-6.
