BRIEFLY : Duarte Meets Torres at Country Club

Frankie Duarte (40-6-1, 30 knockouts) will make his first appearance Tuesday night since winning the North American Boxing Federation bantamweight championship. He’ll face 30-year-old Jose Torres (31-13, 12 knockouts) of Tucson in the 10-round main event at the Country Club in Reseda.

Torres, who is moving up from the flyweight class, has among his 31 victories a win over Alfred Rangel, who, in turn, lost a split decision to Jesus Salud--the boxer Duarte beat with a ninth-round TKO for the NABF title.

Also on Tuesday night’s card: Kenny Hart (1-0, one knockout) of Los Angeles meets Manuel Murrillo (3-2, three knockouts) of San Diego in a six-round light heavyweight match; Miguel Mendoza (1-0, one knockout) of North Hollywood takes on Victor Barajas (making his pro debut) of Los Angeles in a four-round lightweight bout; Milford Kemp (2-1) of North Hollywood opposes Granger Korff (4-2, two knockouts) of Culver City in a four-round middleweight fight; heavyweights Levi Billips (0-1) of San Diego and Lionel Washington (1-1, one knockout) of Bakersfield meet in a four-rounder, and middleweights Tom Lillard (2-1, one knockout) of Los Angeles and Kola Havea (0-1) of Riverside will be the opponents in another four-rounder.

First fight is set for 8 p.m.

Sutton, Dameworth Lead Agoura Field

Melissa Sutton of Newbury Park and Bryan Dameworth of Agoura headline the list of athletes scheduled to compete in the Agoura Cross-Country Invitational at Paramount Ranch in Agoura today at 9 a.m.

Sutton is the two-time defending Southern Section 4-A cross-country champion. Dameworth is undefeated this season.

Santa Monica College quarterback Kevin Bray, who led the Corsairs to a 42-39 win over College of the Desert on Saturday, has been selected as Western State Conference offensive player of the week. Bray completed 22 of 35 passes for 313 yards and 4 touchdowns.

Cornerback Keeway Young and linebacker Jim Moreno, each a member of the Allan Hancock defense that has given up only 97 yards total offense and 1.5 points a game, were named WSC co-defensive players of the week.

Moreno, a 6-1, 220-pound sophomore, had six unassisted tackles and two fumble recoveries against the Cal Poly San Luis Obispo JV on Saturday.

After two nonconference games, Moorpark College rates second in the WSC in team offense with 443 yards a game average. Santa Monica, with a 462 average, ranks first. Moorpark running back Jim Bittner Jr., who led the WSC in rushing last season, is seventh in conference with 156 yards on 23 carries. Teammate Robert Davis, a transfer from Pierce, is third in conference with 193 yards on 18 carries.

The Los Angeles Racing Team, a Los Angeles-based amateur bicycle racing team, is seeking riders interested in training for the 1987 cycling season.

The team, which teaches European team tactics and advanced training techniques, begins preparing in the fall for next season.
