City employees in Los Angeles owe more than $1 million in unpaid child support, and the district attorney’s office has pledged to collect the delinquent payments. City Controller Rick Tuttle said 185 workers owe an average of $5,608 each, and the families of 89 of those employees receive welfare in the form of Aid to Families with Dependent Children. Tuttle gave a list of 32,000 city employees to the district attorney’s office to match against computer listings of all county parents behind in child support. “We’re treating city employees like any other case,” Assistant Dist. Atty. Curt Livesay said. “We will attempt to get wage assignments.” Attorney Gloria Allred said both Tuttle and Dist. Atty. Ira Reiner are “grandstanding” on the issue, and added that the city should already have disciplined delinquent employees.
