Experience in the North

For many years travel has been my favorite pastime, and as a result I read the L.A. Times Travel Section regularly. I have learned many helpful things about travel along with learning of places of interest which I would normally know nothing about. One of my favorite parts is the Letters From Travel Readers section wherein various travelers contribute interesting and valuable information.

While reading your section Sept. 21 I read the travelers’ comments regarding the White Pass and Yukon railroad, which is no longer in operation. It was my good fortune some years ago to ride the train from Skagway to Whitehorse. It was indeed a wonderful experience, and I am saddened over its loss.

Recently it was my good fortune to fly from LAX via Vancouver to Whitehorse and feel that the segment from Vancouver to Whitehorse over the Canadian Rockies is one of the greatest scenic wonders I have ever witnessed--the mountains with snow year round, hundreds of lakes hidden away, many streams and rivers flowing down wild canyons, is a vast scene that must be seen to be enjoyed and appreciated.

I boarded a bush plane (Beaver) for Kluawe Wilderness Lodge, about two hours flying time. After a beautiful flight into the bush country I spent two weeks fishing, picking wild cranberries and generally relaxing. The lodge is well-organized, with individual cabins, lodge room, etc. After an excellent supper I retired to my cabin, stoked up a fire in a wood-burning stove and read until sleep time, usually not too long. I hated to leave, and am planning another trip to the Yukon.
