Bob Sebra fired a two-hitter in pitching the first shutout of his career, and Tim Raines drove in the game’s only run as the Montreal Expos edged the New York Mets, 1-0, Tuesday night at Montreal.

Sebra (5-5) pitched his third complete game of the year, striking out four and walking two. Ron Darling (14-6) took the loss for the Mets, giving up only six hits in seven innings.

The Expos took the lead when Mitch Webster hit his league-leading 12th triple with one out in the first inning. Raines then grounded out to shortstop to drive in the run.

St. Louis 5, Pittsburgh 3--Andy Van Slyke drove in three runs with a homer and a two-run single in a 3-for-3 night to help the Cardinals beat the Pirates at St. Louis.

Winner Danny Cox survived a rough start to even his record at 12-12, retiring the last 14 batters he faced.

Rick Rhoden (15-12) failed for a sixth straight time to gain his 16th victory.

Atlanta 8, Cincinnati 7--Bob Horner homered and drove in three runs, and Albert Hall made a game-saving catch in the ninth inning to help the Braves win at Atlanta.

The Reds added two runs in the ninth, but a diving catch by right fielder Hall prevented Cincinnati from possibly tying the score. With the Reds trailing, 8-5, and the bases loaded, pinch-hitter Tony Perez sliced a ball down the right-field line. Hall made a full-length dive to catch the ball.

Hall came out of the game after that with an apparent shoulder injury. Kurt Stillwell then doubled home a run to make it 8-7, but Gene Garber struck out Buddy Bell to end the game.

Rick Mahler (14-17) struck out six and walked one to improve to 9-2 lifetime against the Reds. The right-hander gave up seven hits through 7 innings. Garber recorded the final two outs for his 24th save.

San Francisco 6, Houston 5--Candy Maldonado hit a sacrifice fly with one out in the bottom of the ninth to lift the Giants over the Astros at San Francisco.

Milwaukee 5, Detroit 0--Tim Leary pitched a four-hit shutout, and Rick Cerone and Paul Molitor each had two hits and scored a run at Milwaukee as the Brewers scored their sixth victory in seven games.

Leary (11-12) allowed just one hit after Darnell Coles doubled to lead off the second. The 27-year-old right-hander retired 15 consecutive batters in the middle innings. He struck out five and walked two.

Texas 9, Oakland 5--Ruben Sierra’s three-run homer keyed a seven-run third inning, and right-hander Kevin Brown won his major league debut as the Rangers beat the A’s at Arlington, Tex.

New York 5, Toronto 2--Rickey Henderson’s ninth leadoff home run of the season ignited a four-run first inning, and reliever Dave Righetti got his 43rd save as the Yankees defeated the Blue Jays at New York.

Righetti pitched perfectly over the final 2 innings and is two shy of the major league save record of 45 held by Dan Quisenberry and Bruce Sutter.

Jesse Barfield homered in the fourth for his league-leading 37th of the season.
