Two people are in custody after someone fired a shot at a police officer during a traffic stop after the break-up of a possible drug deal in Southeast San Diego on Thursday, authorities said.

San Diego Police Agent Rey Armstrong approached a parked 1975 Cadillac near 32nd and J streets when he saw someone leaning through a window, talking with three people inside. As he approached, the person walked away and the car sped off, spokesman Rick Carlson said.

Armstrong pursued the car until it stopped, and two passengers got out. One pointed a handgun at him and fired but missed.

Both passengers and the driver fled on foot. A 15-year-old juvenile and an adult were arrested half an hour later in an alley behind 3200 K St.

The adult was identified as Edward Sampson Jr., 18, of Quail Drive, Carlson said.

Sgt. Michael Hentigan said charges are pending and police are looking for another suspect. It was unclear who fired the shot, and the handgun had not been found.

Armstrong, an 8-year veteran, had been shot at several years ago in the same vicinity, Carlson said.
