FALL SPORTS HIGHLIGHTS : Kroll’s Record Paces Alemany

It took Alemany’s Jennifer Kroll merely two weeks to break her school record of 29 kills in a match, registering 34 in a San Fernando Valley League match Thursday at Bell-Jeff. The senior middle blocker, who is also an All-Southern Section softball and basketball player, had 12 blocks and served for 12 points in Alemany’s victory over Bell-Jeff, 15-11, 16-14, 13-15, 14-16, 15-9.

Strong performances for Alemany were turned in by Janna Burleson, who had 4 kills and 5 blocks, and Stacey Nicklaw, who served for 15 points and had 3 kills.

Chaminade def. Notre Dame, 16-14, 15-12, 15-10--Kathy Hayes had 12 kills and Anna Suarez added 9 for Chaminade (2-0, 6-0). Notre Dame’s Andrea Banducci had five kills, Kristin Borella had 10 blocks and Cindy Friedman served for 8 points in the San Fernando Valley League match at Chaminade. Notre Dame is 1-1.

Louisville def. St. Genevieve, 15-4, 15-7, 15-10--Louisville’s Nancy Hawkins had a game-high 13 kills in the San Fernando Valley League match. Louisville is 2-0 in league play, and St. Genevieve is 0-2.

Agoura def. Santa Clara, 15-4, 15-4, 15-1--Dawn Krenik had seven kills for Agoura (2-0) in the Frontier League match at Santa Clara.

Burroughs def. Hart, 15-2, 15-4, 16-14--Traci Tilton had 10 kills for Burroughs (2-0), and teammate Mary Ann Wagner added 8 kills in the Foothill League match at Burroughs.

Westlake def. Channel Islands, 15-7, 15-13, 15-11--Westlake’s Aaron Holleman had a game-high eight kills in the Marmonte League match at Channel Islands (0-5). Outside hitter Kim Valentino and middle blocker April Devine each had six kills. Westlake, ranked No. 1 in the Southern Section 2-A poll, is 5-0 in league.

Newbury Park def. Royal, 15-13, 9-15, 16-14, 15-8--Seniors Karin Austin had 18 kills and Debbie Powers added 12 for Newbury Park (2-3) in a Marmonte League match at Newbury Park. Camille Mitchell played outstanding defense. Royal is 3-2.

L.A. Baptist def. Marshall Fundamental, 15-5, 15-7, 15-6--Sophomore Michelle Christiansen led L.A. Baptist (5-1) with five kills in the Alpha League match. Teammate Kendra Frazier had five blocks.

Montclair Prep def. La Verne Lutheran, 15-3, 15-5, 15-11--Montclair Prep’s Amy Lehrner had nine kills and seven blocks, and teammate Kari Knighton added six kills in the Alpha League match at Montclair Prep. Montclair Prep (5-1 in league) is tied for second with L.A. Baptist.

Village Christian def. Western Christian, 14-16, 17-15, 15-2, 14-16, 15-11--Junior Karin Yoho had 24 kills, 16 digs and 5 blocks for Village Christian (6-0, 11-1 overall). Teammate Heather Hepburn added 20 kills, 10 digs and 7 aces in the Alpha League match.

Taft def. Cleveland, 15-13, 13-15, 15-8--Taft had solid performances from Karen Panitch (nine digs and four aces), Robin Melnyk (eight kills and four aces) and Alana Regan and Lysa Nemiroff, who each had five kills, in the nonleague match at Taft.

Kennedy def. Canoga Park, 15-13, 13-15, 15-11--Marille Brewer had a game-high eight kills for Kennedy in the nonleague match at Canoga Park. Both Canoga Park and Kennedy are 2-2.

WATER POLO

Crespi 20, Mater Dei 16--David Scott scored 13 goals and Chappie DeHaven’s four goals and seven assists were enough for a Del Rey League victory at Mater Dei. Crespi is 2-0 in league, Mater Dei is 0-2.

Royal 14, Westlake 5--Greg Frazier scored eight times and Todd Jacobson had 11 saves for Royal (2-0) in a Marmonte League game.

BOYS CROSS-COUNTRY

Hart 23, Burroughs 36--Burroughs’ Javier Primera won the Foothill League race in 15:49, but Hart’s Frank Flores and Bobby Bans finished within 10 seconds of the winning pace to take second and third.

Newbury Park 22, Camarillo 33--Newbury Park’s Mike Esparza (15:23), Kelly Macone (16:01) and Matt Guetschoff (16:02) finished first through third in the Marmonte League meet at Newbury Park. Newbury Park is 3-0. Camarillo is 1-2.

Thousand Oaks def. Westlake, 15-42, and Royal, 15-50; Westlake def. Royal, 19-38--Paul McCarter, Doug Fairman and John Rogers led a sweep by Thousand Oaks in the Marmonte League double-dual meet at Cal Lutheran. McCarter, Fairman and Rogers all ran 16:35 for the three-mile course.

GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY

Thousand Oaks def. Westlake, 28-29, and Royal 15-50; Westlake def. Royal, 15-50--Fourth-ranked Thousand Oaks upset second-ranked Westlake behind the course-record performance of Christy Farrell in the Marmonte League double-dual meet. Farrell’s 18:23 effort broke her previous record by 30 seconds. Teammates Jena Haggenmiller (19:29) and Angie Lovell (19:46) finished third and fifth.

Hart 15, Burroughs 49--Cindy Medearis finished first in 21:01 and teammates Ann Flores and Patrice Arter finished second and third to lead Hart to the Foothill League sweep.

Hart improved to 2-0 in league, while Burroughs fell to 0-2.

Newbury Park 17, Camarillo 42--Newbury Park’s Melissa Sutton set her fifth course record in as many outings with a 17:04 win on the three-mile course at Newbury Park. Teammates Amy Nesbitt (18:53) and Cathy Severn (19:38) finished second and third in the Marmonte League dual meet.
