Thatcher Makes a Move to the Left--and Sprains Ankle
British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher lurched to the left and sprained her ankle while posing for a photographer today on the first day of her ruling Conservative Party’s annual congress but remained impassive throughout.
Thatcher was responding to a request from a photographer outside the conference center in this southern English seaside resort when her heel caught in a manhole cover.
But she did not fall and if she felt any pain, she did not show it. A local doctor treated the “slight” sprain with blocks of ice.
A Conservative Party spokesman said the injury would not interfere with her conference activities.
