County OKs Plan for Malibu Units
A land-use plan for Malibu allowing construction of an additional 6,582 houses, apartments and condominiums in a region stretching along 27 miles of shoreline west of Topanga Canyon and five miles inland to the Santa Monica Mountains was approved Tuesday by the Los Angeles County Board of Supervisors.
However, the California Coastal Commission must agree to the plan before it takes effect.
The state and county have been trying to reconcile their strikingly different visions of Malibu’s future for more than three years, with the state emphasizing the sensitive environment and the county focusing on owners’ rights to build on their property.
Coastal Commission South Coast Director Tom Crandall said hundreds of differences have been resolved.
