Edison Agrees to Turn 2 Tracts Back to Blue-Light Districts
Bringing to an end almost a year of controversy, two La Canada Flintridge housing tracts will again be lit by blue-tinted mercury street lights.
Southern California Edison has agreed to replace 10 orange-tinted sodium street lights with the old-style mercury lights favored by residents, Edison spokeswoman Eileen Tschernenko said.
Edison is converting almost 300 street lamps in the city from mercury to the more energy-efficient sodium lights. But members of the Starlight Mesa and Angeles Crest homeowners associations vigorously protested the conversion of 10 lights on their streets, saying that the orange lights cast an unnatural glow on their homes and gardens.
This summer, the La Canada Flintridge City Council agreed to reconsider the issue and appointed a committee to meet with Edison officials.
Tschernenko said Edison agreed to replace the lights as a gesture of good will. She said conversion costs will run between $50 and $75 a lamp.
