The official death toll from the 1984 Union Carbide gas leak has risen by about 500 people to more than 2,200, and about 300,000 of the survivors are in “alarming” condition, an official said today.

The spokesman for Madhya Pradesh state said that as of Sept. 30, 2,233 people had died from the leak--history’s worst industrial accident--and 338 other fatalities were awaiting verification as gas-related. The previously announced death toll was 1,754.
