Junior middleweight boxer Luis Resto and manager-trainer Carlos (Panama) Lewis have been jailed after their convictions on assault charges arising from Resto’s victory over Billy Ray Collins Jr. in a 1983 bout.

The defendants were accused of removing half of the horse-hair padding from Resto’s gloves before a career-ending beating he gave Collins June 16, 1983, at Madison Square Garden. The jury convicted both of second- and third-degree assault, criminal possession of a weapon--Resto’s fists--and conspiracy.

Collins suffered permanent damage to his right eye. In March 1984, he had become despondent, was drinking and died after driving his car into a ditch. His father said it was suicide.
