Longshot Lichi, Favored Shywing Win Divisions of Autumn Days Handicap
Lichi, a longshot, and Shywing, a favorite, each won a division of the Autumn Days Handicap for older fillies and mares Wednesday at Santa Anita.
Lichi, ridden by Gary Baze, finished a nose in front of favored Tax Dodge, ridden by Chris McCarron, to win the first division. Outstandingly, ridden by Gary Stevens, was third, another 1 lengths back.
Shywing, ridden by Laffit Pincay, finished 1 lengths ahead of Her Royalty, ridden by McCarron, in the second division. Water Crystals, ridden by Fernando Toro, was third, a nose farther back.
Lichi defeated six rivals and earned $29,875. She was clocked in 1:14 3/5 for about 6 1/2 furlongs over the Hillside turf course.
Shywing defeated eight and earned $31,075. She was clocked in 1:14 4/5.
Lichi paid $18.40, $6.40 and $3. Shywing paid 7.60, $4.20 and $3.
Lichi, carrying 115 pounds, chased Tax Dodge, 119, from the far turn and got up in the final strides. Outstandingly lacked the needed finish under highweight of 120 pounds.
Shywing, highweight of 120 pounds, drove to the lead in the final furlong and drew clear in the final yards. Her Royalty, 119, led from the start, but was unable to hold off the winner.
