Share

A construction worker was killed Thursday when a piece of heavy equipment toppled into a ditch where he was working, police said.

Jeffrey Palmer, 30, of Long Beach was crushed when an embankment gave way, causing a 15-ton front loader, which is similar to a bulldozer, to fall on him about 9:45 a.m., Police Lt. Bob Lennert said.

Palmer, employed by MBR Construction Co. of Long Beach, was part of a crew building a pipeline at Parker-Hannifin Corp. headquarters in the 18000 block of Von Karman Avenue, Lennert said.

He was treated at the scene by county Fire Department paramedics and taken to Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 10:37 a.m., Lennert said.

An autopsy will be performed to determine the exact cause of death, Lennert said, adding that the accident was being investigated by the coroner’s office and the California Occupational Safety and Health Administration.
