Mahony, Curran to Share Views

Los Angeles Archbishop Roger Mahony and Father Charles Curran, whose credentials to teach moral theology at Catholic University of America were removed by the Vatican, will both speak on “Authority and Dissent in the Roman Catholic Church” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday on the USC campus.

It is believed to be the first time since Curran was censured in August that a U.S. bishop has appeared on the same platform with Curran.

“Both speakers will make a statement of about 20 minutes, then open it up to the audience to questions,” said Donald E. Miller, director of the USC School of Religion. “It will not be a debate format.” The event is at USC’s Bovard Auditorium.

Curran has repeatedly differed with church teachings by arguing, in some cases, that contraception, abortion, homosexuality and divorce can be morally acceptable. He was under investigation by the Vatican’s Sacred Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith since 1979.
