BAD PENNMANSHIP
What does one call an ugly, oozing pomposity like Jack Mathews’ vicious diatribe against Sean Penn (“A Penn in Search of a Hand,” Sept. 24)? Psychotic criticism? Surely it wasn’t journalism.
Mathews, whoever he is, has the right to avoid Sean Penn movies (though in so doing he will miss the finest work of the young generation of actors). Beyond that, The Times has evidently given him the right to puke on its pages.
The Times should rethink its decision. He should be spanked.
