A slate of proposed improvements for Amtrak’s passenger train service between Los Angeles and San Diego will be discussed Tuesday at a public meeting of local, state and federal officials in Santa Ana.

The Los Angeles-San Diego Rail Corridor Study Group will meet to discuss a report which identifies 185 ways to improve service between the two cities, said Dan Parker, a spokesman for the California Department of Transportation.

The report details such improvements as reducing travel times, adding new stations and additional track, renovating existing stations and improving safety and rider comfort, Parker said.

Amtrak runs seven round trips daily between Los Angeles and San Diego, with an annual ridership of 1.4 million, according to Caltrans.

Representatives from Amtrak, Caltrans, the Federal Railroad Assn. and the rail consulting firm of Wilbur Smith and Associates are expected to attend the meeting, Parker said. Also expected are members of the Southern California Assn. of Governments, the Los Angeles and Orange County transportation commissions and the United Transportation Union, he said.

The study group will meet later to assess the cost of the options and agree on final recommendations, which will be sent to the state Legislature next summer, Parker said.
