Devastating

Gangs are rapidly becoming a great threat to the South-Central Los Angeles area. More and more we hear of innocent bystanders being injured, or even killed, in the cross fire of foolish gangster rivalry.

On Sept. 30, there was an article in The Times pertaining to the accidental death of a 14-year-old girl named JaNai Marie Johnson. JaNai was an ex-classmate of mine from elementary school, and her death occurred in the perimeter of my immediate neighborhood.

Now I find this devastating. What makes a teen-ager so filled with hate toward another human life so as to desire to take it? And what makes anyone so careless that it never even crosses his mind who else may be hurt in the process?

If parents would only spend time with their children from the time that they are small, I feel that such atrocities could be better prevented.
