Browns Beat on Chiefs a Bit More, 20-7
To hear John Mackovic tell it, the Kansas City Chiefs lost to the Raiders and the Cleveland Browns last week.
Bernie Kosar riddled the weakened Chiefs’ defense for 287 yards and 2 touchdowns Sunday as the Browns scored a 20-7 victory over Kansas City.
“The injuries piled up on us,” said Mackovic, whose team played without five ailing starters. “We paid a little bit today for last week. We were thin in some places.”
Kosar completed 22 of 35 passes, including touchdowns of 16 yards to Earnest Byner in the second quarter and 6 yards to Ozzie Newsome in the third.
Browns’ Coach Marty Schottenheimer denied that he had targeted the Chiefs’ secondary, even though Kansas City defensive backs Lloyd Burruss and Albert Lewis were out with injuries.
“It certainly wasn’t our intention to come out and throw the ball all day long,” Schottenheimer said. “But we had some success, and with a couple of their people being out, we kept at it.”
Added Newsome: “Bernie is playing as well as any quarterback in the NFL right now. He is picking out the guy who has the best match-up on every play, and then delivering the ball.”
Kosar’s scoring pass to Newsome, who has caught at least one pass in 104 straight games, broke a 7-7 tie early in the third quarter.
Kosar was intercepted by Kevin Ross late in the first half, after throwing 177 consecutive passes without an interception.
Matt Bahr added field goals of 34 and 36 yards for the Browns (4-2).
Kansas City (3-3) took a 7-0 lead on the first play of the second quarter when Todd Blackledge threw a 26-yard touchdown pass to Stephone Paige.
