A donnybrook on the Newport Pier early Monday resulted in one man being hit by a car and an arrest of the driver for suspicion of attempted murder, police said.

Daniel Carl Brown, 22, of Newport Beach was booked into City Jail after he tried to run down the other man about 2 a.m., said Newport Beach Police Lt. Tim Newman. He said Brown was being held on $250,000 bail.

Brown fled the scene and was later arrested when police found him at a friend’s home.

Paul Brenner, 24, of Winnipeg, Canada, was in serious but stable condition Monday afternoon at Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, police said.

Newman provided this account:

Brown, Brenner and several other men became embroiled in a fight on the Balboa Peninsula. Brown helped an injured friend into his car, then ran over a parking meter and onto the sidewalk with his car, striking Brenner at 26th Street and Newport Boulevard.

Brenner was treated by paramedics, and then transported to the hospital’s trauma center, police said.
