The California Highway Patrol reported that there were 517,003 accidents last year, resulting in 4,933 deaths, but that was 75 fewer fatal accidents than in 1984 and 471 fewer than in 1979. Roughly half of the fatal accidents in 1985 involved drivers under the influence of alcohol, slightly fewer than in 1984. Those under 30 years of age--roughly 30% of the licensed drivers--accounted for 47.2% of the serious accidents.
