South County : Retirement Party to Honor SDG&E; Official
William S. Webb, for 22 years the top man for San Diego Gas & Electric Co.’s operations in south Orange County and parts of San Diego County, will be honored at a retirement party Friday in the San Clemente Community Center.
Webb, who will be 65 on Nov. 27, first began working for the utility company in 1952 as a sales representative in San Juan Capistrano. After several promotions, he was made district manager in 1964 and finally district director in 1980.
Born in Quanah, Tex., Webb was a junior at West Texas State University when the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the United States into World War II. He became a bombardier-navigator on B-25 planes stationed in the Aleutian Islands.
During his military training in 1942, he met Virginia Speer of San Juan Capistrano and they were married in November, 1944.
While with SDG&E;, Webb was active in more than a dozen community and civic organizations and affairs.
After his official retirement on Nov. 7, he will be succeeded as district director by Richard E. Witton.
The party and banquet Friday will start at 6:30 p.m. at the community center, located at Avenida Del Mar and Calle Seville.
