The University of Maryland’s chancellor has asked outside consultants to examine the athletic department, and reports continued that he is working on buying out basketball Coach Lefty Driesell’s contract.
Chancellor John B. Slaughter said that Michigan Athletic Director Don Canham would bring in the consulting team for about a week next month to conduct surveys.
“It’s an overview of the entire operation of the department, covering everything from compliance (with NCAA rules) to finances to public and media relations,” Canham said.
Meanwhile, the Baltimore Sun reported that Slaughter was working on a deal to buy out the remaining nine years of Driesell’s contract for as much as $3 million.
