Lloyd D. Turner, the outspoken and quick-tempered president and chief executive of Floating Point Systems, has been ousted in a general management shake-up at the Beaverton, Ore.-based maker of powerful scientific computers.

Sources said the board of directors had requested Turner’s resignation. Although he will continue as a consultant on the company’s T Series supercomputers, that will be only “for a short time,” one company executive said.

In addition, C. N. (Norm) Winningstad, primary founder of the company and its chairman since 1970, will step aside, taking the position of vice chairman.

Milton R. Smith, a company founder and its general counsel, has been named interim chairman and chief executive. George P. O’Leary, another founder, will return to the company as president and chief operating officer. A newly formed management committee will include Winningstad, Smith, O’Leary and Earl Wantland, chief executive of Textronix and a patriarch or the area’s high-tech base.
