The U.S. attorney’s office, acting for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, filed suit in Los Angeles federal court against the operators of a battery-lead recycling plant in the City of Industry for releasing hazardous wastes into the ground and water and failing to comply with a Nov. 8, 1985 deadline to clean up their operation. Assistant U.S. Atty. James R. Arnold said the suit against the plant, operated by two Delaware corporations, Quemetco Inc. and RSR Corp., is the first of its kind to be brought against a company in the Los Angeles area under the Solid Waste Disposal Act. The companies are subject to fines of up to $25,000 for every day of violation, Arnold said.
