Batting for Baedeker

Share

The Sept. 7 article by Shirley Marks about the 80-year-old Baedeker guidebook brought to mind the fascinating little map shop near my home in Hollywood. I doubt if they have any priceless antiques like that, but they do have, or will find, just about anything a traveler phones up and requests. This includes large-scale maps for bicycling and hiking, and maps and guidebooks from behind the Iron Curtain.

It’s called Maps to Anywhere, at 1514 Hillhurst Ave. (at Hollywood Boulevard). One can call them at (213) 660-2101 and have them mail out anything from a rare language tape to beautiful reproductions of ancient maps complete with sea monsters. But I find that browsing among their 10,000 different maps is almost as much fun as traveling.
