A 41-year-old man, trying to flee two attackers, survived a gunshot that penetrated his clothes, but didn’t break the skin, police reported.

The victim, Luong Tran of Garden Grove, was approached by two men at 11:41 p.m. Saturday as he walked to his parked car on Rosita Place, near Westminster Avenue. Police said the pair tried to rob Tran, punching and kicking at him with their hands and feet. Tran managed to get to his car and was attempting to drive away when one of the two men fired a shot at him through the car windshield with a small-caliber handgun.

The bullet pierced the windshield and penetrated Tran’s jacket, but it didn’t break the skin, Police Lt. John Urbanowski said.

“It (the slug) went through the windshield and that deflected a lot of the speed of the round, and it went into his jacket, where it stopped,” Urbanowski said.

Tran was taken to Garden Grove Medical Center and was released, police said. Officers are searching for the two suspects, described as Latinos in their 20s.
