Stamford, Conn-based GTE posted a 12% increase in third-quarter income and an earnings rise of 9% over the prior-year period due to the firm’s recent actions taken to make the company more competitive, officials said. The actions included two joint ventures in the long-distance telephone business and communications-products areas. Telephone Operations continued to perform well and operating results at Communications Products were higher. However, income was adversely affected by lower results at Electrical Products and losses at US Sprint, the company said.
