Candelaria Wins Comeback Award

Angel pitcher John Candelaria, who finished the 1986 season with a 10-2 record and 2.55 earned-run average, has been named the American League comeback player of the year by The Sporting News.
Candelaria, 32, started 16 games this season, 15 of them after elbow surgery. He was acquired by the Angels from the Pittsburgh Pirates during the 1985 season after going 2-4 with a 3.64 ERA in a relief role for much of the season. He became a starter for the Angels and finished with seven wins.
Candelaria is the second Angel to have won the award. Clyde Wright, another left-handed pitcher, was named the comeback player in 1970.
