Motorists taking advantage of cheap gasoline purchased a record 1.12 billion gallons in August, netting $101 million in excise taxes for the state, the Board of Equalization said. August sales were the highest monthly total ever, the board added. It also was the sixth consecutive month for billion-gallon gas consumption in California. Board Chairman Richard Nevins said the records were broken “due in part to pump prices, which were at their lowest level since the spring of 1979.”
