Share

A request for a $6-million federal Urban Development Action Grant to help develop a business and industrial park at the former General Motors assembly plant has been turned down.

The money was to be used for off-site improvements and infrastructure, including water lines and lighting.

The money, which was part of a $94-million federal grant, was awarded to state projects on a competitive basis.

The next funding opportunity will not take place before next year. The city, which expects to receive reconsideration, will not know the outcome until February.

An $80-million retail and industrial complex is planned for the 90-acre site. Construction is expected to start early next year.
